Coalition Government is Inevitable

Indonesia Legislative Election already held on Wednesday (9/4). Referring to the quick count, the winner is PDI-P, Golkar and Gerindra. Starting the day after, politicians are starting to talk about a coalition. Those who had been seen as not to get along so well, inevitably, the have to sit together after all.

The grassroots political analyst from Strategic Consulting (ARSC), Janty Jie, hopes that any coalition will not become a means of "horse-trading" or distribution of power. A coalition should really be for progress and the development of the nation.

"PDI-P, Golkar and Gerindra have declared presidential candidate (candidates), respectively. Only Democrats are awaiting for the results of their convention. These four parties are the determinant of the direction of the government post to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration," said Janty in a discussion entitled "Prospects of Coalition Towards Presidential Election 2014" in Jakarta, Wednesday (9/4). The discussion was held by Indonesian Voices for Change.

According to Janty, no matter how great PDIP and Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is, they can not stand alone without a coalition. Similarly, Chairman of Golkar, Aburizal Bakrie (ARB) should embrace popular figure to boost his own. "In a coalition, all parties should not form a coalition through the 'back door' or under the table, rather to make deals in the sense of transparency befor the public eyes ang by a clear program," said Janty.

Meanwhile, political observers, Radhiansyah Emil of Paramadina University said, the 2014 presidential election tend to merge small and medium parties with the party who gets the most votes. The case would be diffrent if the winner are reluctant of having to form a fat coalition. If that is the case, the next government will have difficulties in formulating government budgets along with the parliament.

While Beryl Martawardaya of University of Indonesia, who is an economics observer, suggested the needs to create an ideal coalition for a "working cabinet" that is not too be affected by the negotiation of political interests.
