Non-voters are The True Winner for 2014 Election

The true winner of Indonesia Legislative Election turned out to be the non-voters. As Tempo reported, people who do not exercise their voting rights in the 2014 election allegedly higher than previous elections. "We predict that abstentions rate reached 34.02 percent thistime," said Rully Akbar, a researcher for Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) on Wednesday, April 9 2014.

Rully noted, the figure in the 1999 elections was 10.21 percent. In 2004. it rose to 23.34 percent than by 2009 it increased up to 29.01 percent. This year, a quick calculation based on LSI, abstentions rate reached 34 percent, its quite far beyond the votes for PDI-P (19.67 %), Golkar (14.54 %), Gerindra (11.86 %), or Democrats (9.75 %).

According to Rully's analysis, there are a number of factors that cause this. First, there are some administrative issues where a person is not registered in a polling station. Secondly, is technical reasons like some people claim they have no time for voting because of their jobs.

However, Rully also mentioned some other reasons. "Or for political reasons that a person is no longer trust the electoral institutions, and they felt no connection with any candidates or parties," he said.
