KPK Needs to be Authorized to Investigate Election-related Crimes

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is hoping to have the authority to investigate allegations of election-related crimes. Deputy chairman of KPK Adnan Pandu Praja, said that there is a similar institutions in the United States like KPK, the Public Integrity Section (PIN) and it has had the authority to do so.

"The message is, if you reflect to another country, the Commission' authority may be expanded to solve election crimes," said Adnan, at Commission Office, Kuningan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (08/04/2014).

So far, the Commission is only authorized to receive reports of election violations related by communities. Regarding the follow-up of such reports, according to Adnan, it is only included in the field of prevention. The anti-corruption agency can only investigate further if there were indications of corruption behind it.

"In the realm of this kind of data we rely on PPATK because it's the proof that the real money is from someone (a person), there is our limitations. If he gave away, the money is not associated with gratification, so it is difficult (for KPK to investigate)."

Today, the Commission received a report submitted by the election monitoring site, matamassa.org. The report said that some 20 election violations were committed almost by all political parties in a number areas in Jakarta. For this report, Adnan said that the Commission will coordinate with the Election Commission and The Election Supervisory Body.

"We can not reject public reports, we must accept this as materials to be studied," said Adnan.

He also hoped that each political party can take action against serious candidates who are suspected of money politics.
